Lately I've been thinking about climate change, and figured I'd make this for myself to follow, and anyone who wants to! Here's some things you can do to pull your weight in the world:
- Shop online for only what you absolutely have to
- Only throw food away if it's inedible and can't be used in compost
- Buy in bulk (less packaging)
- Make your own food, don't buy snacks or meals with a lot of packaging
- Walk, ride a bike or bus whenever you can
- Dry/clean your hands with cloth towel
- Reuse (or just don't use) plastic water bottles, plastic bags, and packaging
- Grow your own food, even if it's just a few different plants in pots
- Turn your lights off during the day
- Fill up your washing machine and dishwasher all the way before running it
- Don't buy balloons (they're a huge problem in the ocean, especially for sea turtles)
- If you leave your clothes in the dryer for 10 minutes it gets rid of the wrinkles, and you can finish drying them on a drying rack
Small Disclaimer: I am in no way a professional this is just what I think will help
If you have any ideas please comment and I'll add it below!
Pick up any and all trash you find along the ground!! That's a good and important one. :>
For anyone that composts or is thinking about composting food: don't compost meat unless you are burying it outside in the compost pile very soon after scrapping whatever needs to be scrapped (bones, fat, etc). Saying this because if you keep compost in a bucket or bag somewhere inside, you'll get maggots and it's BAD. We keep compost in a lidded bucket under the sink, but can't put any sort of meat into it because of that, especially in the summer when there's actually bugs. But even in the winter, when it's -20 Fahrenheit or colder outside, I've still managed to find flies around the compost. Side note, I mentioned to bury it because if you don't, it attracts animals that you might not particularly want to attract. Especially if you live in the woods
So ye, just in case there was someone out there that might not know about meat in compost
Don't use plastic straws and bags at all is a good one. They get blown around until they end up in the ocean and some poor animal (especially sea turtles) thinks it's food. They end up choking and/or suffocating on the plastic items. Also, the damn fishing line! Get rid of it or don't just dump it! I remember going on a walk on a trail near a lake where lots of people fish. I walked in the wooded trail area empty-handed and walked out with about 4 things of fishing line I found on only that small portion of the lake bank.
try to avoid plugging electronics in until they've got low battery, and then unplug them once they get full!! not only does it waste energy it actually runs the batteries down on the electronics to be plugged in for too longand use the search engine ecosia! they use the money they earn from searches to plant trees in areas where they are especially needed: www.ecosia.org/
